She was predeceased by: her brother Oscar Johnson, Jr.; her parent Irene Bennett; her husband Leon Gowans; her daughter Norma Jean Gowans-Ragsdale; and her great grandchild Abyss Gray.

She is survived by: her brother Jones; her daughters, Diann Gowans-Ellis and Jo Ann King; her son-in-law Wanza King; her grandchildren, Lelandia Gowans (Cookie), Demekus Gowans, Kameron King and Eboni Gray; her great grandchildren, Christaan Montgomery, Noah Fields and Tielah Gowans; and her niece D. Elaine Johnson-Wallace (Leticia Butler). She is also survived by eight great-great grandchildren.
