He is survived by: his wife Wilma Bishop Redeker Smith; his children, Gregory Lee Armstrong, Tammy Jane Smith Lahutsky (Thomas), Donald Franklin Armstrong (Lauri) and Timothy James Smith (Yvette); his stepchildren, Geneva Duff (Bret) and Jonathan Yoder (Heather); his grandchildren, Nicholas Thomas Lahutsky (Erin), Natalie Christine Lahutsky Bor, Mary Katherine Lahutsky, Laeney Helene Armstrong and Ayla Donn Armstrong; and his great grandchildren, Cato Nicholas Lahutsky, Holden Smith Lahutsky, Sevin Isla Hunter and Donnis Kell Hunter.
In 1985, he was one of the first four recipients of the prestigious Pat E. Haggerty Innovation Award, presented by Mark Shepherd, Chairman of the Board of Directors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Texas Instruments and the societies it serves.
