He was predeceased by : his father Robert Merrell Sr.; his adoptive parents, Lanita Jones and Earl Jones (LaNeita Jones); his stepmother Pat Jones; and his stepson-in-law Richard Jenkins.
He is survived by : his mother Bebe Hargrove; his wife June Jones; his son Leland Bird; his stepchildren, Kaye Ross, Debra Jenkins, David Griggs (Star), Ricky Griggs (Mona), Randy Griggs (Lorie) and Rick Collins; his brothers, Robert Merrell Jr., Kevin Larson (Keith Roddy) and Bobby Short; and his stepbrother Dan Langston. He is also survived by his twenty-two grandchildren as well as a multitude of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
