He was predeceased by : his parents, Pablo Zarate and Manuela Zarate; his wife Berta I. Zarate; and his sister Maria Analu Zarate. He is survived by : his children, John David Zarate (Anne) of Lake City, Texas, Robert Zarate of San Diego, Texas, Maria Analu Reyes (Thomas) of Bacliff, Texas, Jessica Soliz (Albert) and Yvette Lopez of Austin, Texas; and his siblings, Davan Zarate (Joe) of Freer, Texas, Rene Zarate (Gloria) of Alice, Texas, Leonel Zarate (Ida), Reynaldo Zarate (Syliva), Petra Hinojosa (Servando) of Alice, Texas, Berta Favela (Pete) of Banquete, Texas and Sylvia Valdez (Oscar) of San Diego, Texas. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
