He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Richard Day and Pauline Day of Port Arthur; his wife Myrtle Day; his brother Ralph Day; his daughters, Jackie Riddle of Port Neches, Ruth Ann "Poppy" Johnston (David) of Cypress, Texas and Susan Ortiz (Raymond) of Onalaska, Texas; his grandchildren, Ryan Johnston, Aaron Johnston (Caitlin), Lauren Habrock (Tyler), Barrett Riddle (Jessica Gryder), Shelby Staples and Joshua Staples; and his caregiver Elizabeth Williams. He was also cherished by four great-grandchildren.
