He was predeceased by : his father Albert Ritter; his daughter Clara Ruth Nelson; and his brothers, James, Donald and Wayne.

He is survived by : his children, Carl Wayne Stephens, Bobby Stephens, Elbert Ritter, Jr. of Vernon, Clayton Ritter of Oklahoma, Delores Winkle of Winnsboro and Kathy Shields of Harrisonville, Missouri.; and his close friend Sandy. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews.
