She was predeceased by: her parents, Albert Keller and Dorothy Mae Hogan. She is survived by: her husband James VerHoef; her aunt Franciscan; her children, Diana Bodensteiner of Iowa, David VerHoef and Susan VerHoef of Austin, Texas.; and her grandchildren, Todd Bergthold of Colorado, Alene Bergthold-Haroldson (Austin Haroldson) of Iowa, Dalton Bergthold, Addie Mae Bergthold-Haroldson and Michael VerHoef (Autumn). She is also survived by extended family, former students, neighbors, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Cloud Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting wild horses-a cause that reflected Shirley's lifelong devotion to animals.
