He was predeceased by: his parents, Clinton Backen and Annie Backen (Martin); his parents-in-law, Edna and Victor Umlang; and his brother-in-law Edward Umlang.
He is survived by: his wife Pat Backen of Lincoln; his daughters, Monica Spiller (William) of Bastrop, Nicole Stobbs (Kevin) of College Station and Caitlin Barnum (Andrew) of Lincoln; his grandchildren, Joshua Spiller (Nicole) of Franklin, Taylor Spiller of Bastrop, Nathan Spiller (Zaina) of Bastrop, Landon, Lilly Stobbs of College Station, Cannon and Cage Barnum of Lincoln; his great grandchildren, Holden, Kase Spiller of Franklin and Hudson Spiller of Bastrop; his siblings, Dennis Backen (Carolyn) of Willis and Betty Harriss (Jim) of Colorado; and his brothers-in-law, Vernon Umlang (Sandra) of Giddings and Dennis Umlang (Cynthia) of Conroe. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday, September 20th 2026 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Monday, September 21st 2026 from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home - Giddings (3950 E Austin St, Giddings, TX 78942). A funeral service was held on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 10:00 AM at the St. John Lutheran Church of Lincoln (1012 Private Rd 8012, Giddings, TX 78942, USA 78942-9263).
Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church Tuition Fund, Giddings Noon Lions Club or the charity of one's choice.
