He was predeceased by: his parents, George E. Abernathy and Ann Abernathy; and his granddaughter Reece Richeson. He is survived by: his wife Sandra "Sandy" Abernathy of La Vernia; his mother-in-law Minnie Rodgers; his daughters, Amber Davis (Justin) of Round Rock and Kierstin Abernathy of Kyle; his siblings, Dennis Abernathy of La Vernia and Dorothy Thornton (Jesse) of Lampasas; his grandchildren, Jaden, Jaxson Davis and Pacey Richeson; and his nieces and nephews, Danny, Dakota Abernathy, Andy and Aaron Thornton.
