He was predeceased by: his mother Nettie Mae (Anderson); his siblings, Herman Goins, Benjamin Goins, Leta Hall and Sarah Mott; and his mother-in-law Dora Mae Hollis.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara Goins of Lufkin; his son James Goins, Jr. (Karen) of Lufkin; his siblings, Jerry Goins (Glenda), Billie Bryce and Waynette Patterson; and his siblings-in-law, Jose Mott, Robert Haak, Odus Haak (Jolee), Gloria Spoon (Mark), Carol Jones, Margaret Haak and Kay Burk. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
