He was predeceased by: his mother Bessie Mettlen (York). He is survived by: his wife Nadine Newland; his children, Robert Mettlen (Sandra), Frieda Woods (Terry) and James Mettlen (Tonja); and his grandchildren, Matthew Mettlen (Jennifer), Brittany Dickey (Aaron), Brianna Hulshouser (Zach) and Ansley Sittler (Tom). He is also survived by two great granddaughters; and four great grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Joseph House, P.O. Box 150554, Lufkin, Texas 75915.
