He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hartwell and Vera Mae Smith (White); and his siblings, Melvin Hartwell Smith, Garland "Mouse" Franklin Smith, Marvin "Squirrel" Derrell Smith and Donna Mae Tingle.
He is survived by: his wife Jean Smith of Maud, Texas; his son Warren; his daughter-in-law Leslie Smith of Maud, Texas; his grandchildren, Weston Smith (Kinzie) of Nash, Texas and Kayley Hackett (Hayden) of Texarkana, Texas; and his great grandchildren, Wylder Smith and Ripley Smith. He is also survived by nieces and nephews; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Bates-Rolf Funeral Home (502 S McCoy Blvd, New Boston, TX 75570). A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 18th 2026 at 2:30 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Friday, September 18th 2026 at the Redwater Cemetery (219 Cotton Ford Rd, Maud, TX 75567).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause Herman was deeply passionate about and generously supported in honor of his fellow veterans.
