He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Jefferson Helms and Bithey Pleasure Kirby Helms; his former wife Joy L. Helms "Sweet Momma"; and his children, Joe Wesley, Danny Ray and Doris Lorraine.
He is survived by: his wife Geneva McBee Helms; his children, Phil Helms, Thomas Helms (Carol), Alvin Helms (Melodee) and Lenora Hunt (David "Andy" Hunt); and his children-in-law, JoAnn Helms and David Gilliam. He is also survived by numerous Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and Great Great-Grandchildren; along with countless other extended family, friends and spiritual sons and daughters.
