He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Dodson Hess and Edith Louisa Williams; his brother Frank Dodson Hess Jr.; and his mother-in-law Opal Holman Hess. He is survived by: his wife Suzanne Jordan Hess; his daughters, Hannelore Hess Le (Dennis) and Leia Hess Johnson (Jason); and his grandchildren, Lucia Le, Gabriel Johnson, Nathalia Johnson and Caroline Le. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

His contributions to the field were significant, and he was granted four patents for technologies he invented.
