He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Speas and Esther Speas; his wife Karen Speas; and his grandson Robert Charles "Tre" Taplin, III. He is survived by: his friend Karen; his daughters, Robin Gibson (Eddy) and Tammy Speas; his grandchildren, Brandi, Jared, Tiffany, Jasmine, Brandon and Elijah; and his brother Ralph (Janet Speas). He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
