Sandra Lou Benefield Obituary

Sandra Lou (Sandy) Benefield passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in Stephenville at the age of 77.

Sandra was born February 7, 1946 in Houston to George Henry and Margaret Dill Ames. She graduated in 1963 from Huntington Park High School in Huntington Park, California. She married Johnie Wayne Benefield April 6, 1968 in Downey, California. As a military wife Sandra stood beside her soldier and lived in several states, then kept the home fires burning during John's service in Vietnam.

In 1984, Sandra earned her ADN from College of the Desert in Palm Desert California. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Methodist Hospital in Houston from 1984 to 1987 and at High Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, California from 1987 to 1990. She served as a home health and hospice nurse from 1990 to 1992 in Joshua Tree.

Sandra was an American Red Cross Volunteer, and served two weeks in New York after the 9/11/01 disaster as nurse coordinator for the Red Cross. She was active in PTA, a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and a volunteer for March of Dimes.

Sandra liked trying new things. She enjoyed art, crafts, music, healthcare, archaeology, welding shop and woodcraft shop.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnie Wayne Benefield; sons John Christopher and William James; and mother Margaret Ames.

Survivors include grandson Dylan Loeffler (Elainey) of Bemerton, Washington, grandson Kaileb Benefield of Hollister, California, and granddaughter Mistaya Benefield (Matias Miguel) of Kingston, Washington; cousins Patrick Pittman (Jana) of Gorman and Michael Pittman (Karen) of Plano; great-grandchildren Raquel Loeffler, Rylan Loeffler, Dylan Loeffler, Jr., Miles Miguel and Dalilah Benefield.

Services are pending. Sandra will be interred beside her husband, Johnie, at Riverside National Cemetery in California.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses who provided such good care of Sandra during her last few years. Memorials are suggested to the American Red Cross and the Wounded Warrior Project.
