James Earl Thigpen entered the gates of Heaven peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 12:25 a.m. at Hospice of East Texas. He was 85 years old.
It was on a cold Valentine's Day, February 14, 1941, that Jim entered this world, a cherished gift to James and Lenora Thigpen in Danville, Virginia. His father dedicated his life to military service, while his mother, Lenora, lovingly cared for their home and family.
Growing up in Danville surrounded by close-knit family, Jim enjoyed spending time with his many cousins and siblings. Those early years were filled with love, laughter, and strong family bonds that remained important to him throughout his life.
Jim attended high school in Petersburg, Virginia, where he developed a passion for music. As a member of the school band, he quickly became known for his musical talents. He even formed his own band, Jimmy Thigpen and the Teenage Rockers, and recorded a record at a young age. At concerts, enthusiastic young fans would cry and faint while Jim continued performing with confidence and charm.
As a young man, Jim's greatest aspiration was to become a pastor. He earned a full scholarship to Baylor University, but life led him down a different path. Following high school, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. After completing his military service, he entered the civilian workforce, first managing a finance company. He later joined Trane, where he spent approximately 30 years and retired as a Manufacturing Engineer.
Those who worked with Jim remember him well. He was rarely seen without a cup of coffee in hand, loose change jingling in his pocket, and his signature green ink pen tucked neatly into a pocket protector.
On June 20, 1975, Jim married his wife, Ruth. Together they shared nearly 51 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with faith, family, music, and unwavering devotion.
Upon retirement, Jim often said all he wanted was a Gibson Country Gentleman guitar and the opportunity to play music around the house. However, music had bigger plans for him. He soon found himself performing with bands throughout East Texas, entertaining residents at nursing homes, and sharing his talents at church, where he faithfully served as a deacon. With the encouragement and support of his wife, Jim also built an impressive guitar collection.
Music was truly Jim's calling. He was gifted on multiple instruments and possessed an exceptional singing voice. Whether performing on stage, in church, or among family and friends, his love for music brought joy to countless lives.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lenora Thigpen, and his brother, Bobby Gene Thigpen.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Ruth Young Thigpen; his sister, Brenda Roberson; his children, John of Phoenix, Arizona; Jim and wife Tammy of Chandler, Texas; David of Tyler, Texas; Sheila and husband Joe of Temple, Texas; and Shelley of Shreveport, Louisiana. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and many friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, faith, humor, and music.
Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Texas Patriot Guard Riders @ETPGR.com and or Willowbrook church in Tyler, Tx.
James Earl Thigpen's legacy will live on through the songs he played, the love he shared, and the family he treasured. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
