He was predeceased by: his father Glen Smith; his siblings-in-law, H. H. and Polly Richardson; and his son-in-law Kirk Munden. He is survived by: his wife Berniece; his children, Michael Jay Smith of Tyler and Cathy Annette Munden of Log Cabin; his grandchildren, Samantha Blair (Cody) of Cypress and Maxwell Michael Munden of Austin; his great grandchildren, Kellan and Kennedy Blair; and his brother-in-law Ned Fowler (Donna) of Nacogdoches. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
