He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thomas Gorrell and Clara Marie "Cricket" Stanford; and his brothers, Bob "Bobby" L. Gorrell and James "Jimmy" W. Gorrell. He is survived by: his children, Synthia "Syndi" M. Gorrell Hillberry (David) and John D. "JD" Gorrell (Melanie); his wife Ann; his children, Leland R. Gorrell (Hayli) and Shaylor L. Gorrell (Jeanne); and his grandchildren, Leland R. Gorrell Jr. (Tamara), Zachary D. Hillberry (Brianne), Brandon M. Hillberry, Wesley C. Gorrell, Ashlynn M. Gorrell, John Hall Gorrell II (MacKenzie), John R. Gorrell, Megan J. Gorrell and Madilyn J. Gorrell. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, along with many beloved nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors (201 N Bosque St, Whitney, TX 76692). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and on Thursday, September 10th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A burial was held on Thursday, September 10th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Macedonia Cemetery. A graveside service was held on Thursday, September 10th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a favorite charity or to Open Range Cowboy Church, 582 FM 1713, Whitney, Texas, where John was a founding member.
