She was predeceased by: her parents, Charles Edwin Goble and Allie Heath Sudweeks Goble; her husbands, Stephen Max Alvey (Max) and Jefferson Slade Mathews (Slade); and her children, Thomas Earl Alvey and Jeri Ann Wise.

She is survived by: her children, Mike Alvey (Laurie), Debbie Harrison (Glen), Dan Alvey (Diane), Jeff Mathews (Monea), Lynn Alvey (Susie), Steve Alvey (Shannon), Greg Alvey (Jeannie), Robert Alvey, Sandy Bulfin, John Alvey (Jennifer), Susan Marston (Bart), Brian Mathews (Cathie), Brad Mathews (Andrea), Becky Mathews and Brenda Brann; and her siblings, Linda Hatfield (Max) and Dennis Goble (Lynda). She is also survived by 55 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

“I served as Bishop from March '84 to Feb '89 in the Layton 11th Ward. During my complete time, Gwen was my Relief Society President. She proved to be so capable it was like I was Bishop over the men and she was a pseudo bishop over the women. She was always there when the sisters were in need (and when I was in need) to take care of the ward business. I will ever be thankful for her, not only for her service, but as a good friend. Bishop Richard M. Allen”
