He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Ross" Merrell and Nelma Merrell (Martinsen); his former wife Betty Ilene Merrell (Richards); his grandson Brett Don Merrell; his brother Norman Merrell; his sister-in-law Donna Joy Merrell (Powell); his stepgrandchildren, Whitney Ann Maurer (Gentry) and Brad Wesley Gross; and his stepson-in-law Dan Gross.
He is survived by: his wife JoAnn Merrell; his sons, Gary (Jane Merrell), Duane (Tammy Merrell), Rick (Doris Salazar), Blaine (Margie Shewell) and Doug (Darshan Merrell); his brother Byron Merrell; his sister-in-law Dian Merrell (Abplanalp); and his stepchildren, Rex, Teresa Wedig, Bruce, Ruth Ann Nelson, Charlene Gross, David and Richelle Gentry. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Viewing will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM at the Naples LDS Chapel (2313 S 1500 E, Vernal, UT 84078). A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at the Vernal Memorial Park (1750 S 500 E, Vernal, UT 84078).
