Douglas Reed Metcalf Obituary

Douglas Reed Metcalf passed away abruptly on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, in St. George, UT, from blunt force trauma endured from a vehicular accident. Doug was born on Tuesday, April 26, 1949, in Salt Lake City, UT, and spent the first 13 years of his life residing in Southern California. He and his family later moved back to Salt Lake City where he graduated Granite High School in 1967, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Utah (Magna Cum Laude), and received his Master of Business Administration from Brigham Young University specializing in Finance (Chartered Financial Analyst). He served a prestigious mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Southeast Mexico from 1968 to 1970. In 1972, Doug married his eternal companion, Nancy Hellewell Metcalf, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Doug was a lifelong learner and was enthusiastic by life’s marvelous possibilities. He and Nancy were international travellers and their family lived in many delightful locations across the United States, finding incredible friends everywhere they lived. Even retired, Doug was still taking classes in Entrepreneurship and Business Management at the Dixie State University.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Reed Metcalf. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, Pasadena, CA; children, Courtney (Cade) Evans, Bountiful, UT; Wyatt (Tatiana) Metcalf, Dallas, TX; and Kelsey (Jon) Garrett, Glendale, CA. He was also an extremely loyal “Papa” to his nine grandchildren: Connor, Hunter, Audrey, Sebastian, Sadie, Callahan, Fritz, Tennyson, and Victoria. Also surviving Doug are his dearest Aunts, Margie Matich and Barbara Bown, and his siblings, Marilyn “Lyn”, Roger, Janice, and Vicki.

One of his grandchildren in particular, Hunter had shared a very beloved bond together. Hunter would frequently refer to Doug as "The Homie" because he was his favorite member of the family and would text him every Saturday. Hunter was dreaming of travelling with him to Iran one day.

Doug was an active giver to every Latter-Day Saint ward he lived in and was often a favorite teacher and speaker among the members.
