He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Strong and Doris Strong; his granddaughter Alexi Wiles; his siblings, Eddie, Nellie, Peggy, Nancy and Margie; and his former wife Merle Kovatch Brownell.

He is survived by: his wife Esther Strong; and his children, Joseph (Holly), David (Holly), Matthew (Cristina), James (Jamie), Alan McLaughlin (Jessica), Kate McLaughlin Wiles (Shane), Justin McLaughlin (Tiffany) and Thomas Langston. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
