He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerrit Smit and Helena Swart; his wife Joann; and his siblings, Marjorie, Joseph, Bill and Jerry.
He is survived by: his children, Leslie Whatcott (Roland) of St. George, Utah, Stephanie Southam (Reeve) of Bismarck and Gerrit R. Smith, Jr. (Stacy) of Little Elm; and his brother Theodore (Marie). He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, as a memorial to him, to either the Humanitarian Aid fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or to the American Cancer Society.
