He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Stanley Nate and Margaret Fern Nate (Langford); his wife Susan Rigtrup; his children, WendySue Merrell (Matt), Brady (Natalie Marshall) and Trent Megan Woodland; his grandchildren, Reed, Paige, Ryan, Chase, Claire and Sydney; and his stepgrandchildren, Kaden, Conner, Carson, Reagan, Asher and Taylor. He was also cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren, one sister and two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

Larry Haidsiak wrote a sympathy message

“My prayers go out to Susan, WendySue, Brady, Trent, and their families. Cornell was a special man. He treated people with love and respect. He had a great sense of humor. My 11 years coaching with Cornell were my fondest years of coaching. Cornell called me Tonto and I called him Kemosabe after the Lone Ranger show. We were faithful companions. My condolences to the family in this loss of a husband, father, and grandfather. He will be truly missed. Larry Haidsiak”
