He was predeceased by: his wife Judy Harklerode Phillips; his parents, Dallas Phillips and Maggie Shope; his brothers, David, Jack and Lloyd "PeeWee" Phillips; and his son-in-law Kirk Gappmayer.

He is survived by: his children, Shauna Gappmayer, Shelley Heaton (Stephen), David Phillips and Debra Ekker (Matthew); and his stepgranddaughter Anna Byrd (Chris). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
