He was predeceased by : his parents, Rev. G. Sexton Buchanan and Nita Kensinger Buchanan; his brother David Buchanan; and his son-in-law S. Marc Sherrod. He is survived by : his wife Patsy Byars Buchanan; his siblings, John Buchanan and Betty Hull; his daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Buchanan (Bob Heath) and Melanie Sherrod; his grandchildren, Caleb Gray Sherrod, Hannah Megan Sherrod (Alex Lewis), Jordan Beth Sherrod and Eden Buchanan Sherrod McAteer (Sam); his stepgrandchildren, David Heath (Kristie) and Tara DeMontmorency; and his great grandchildren, Wilder Marc Sherrod-Lewis and Elouise Gray McAteer. He is also survived by His children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Green Spring Presbyterian Church, 22007 Green Spring Church Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
