He was predeceased by: his parents, Eustace Wesley and Ethel Meredith Showalter; his brothers, Eustace Poage, James Curtis and David Lewis Showalter; and his sister-in-law Pearl Phillips Showalter.
He is survived by: his daughter Jan Medeiros (Keith); his granddaughters, Cassandra Mills (Marc) and Megan Medeiros (Nick Branson); and his siblings-in-law, Ella Cromer (Franklin), Marie Hale (Archie) and Hoyt Phillips (Linda). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Farris Cremation & Funeral Center – Forest Hills Chapel (19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA 24210). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 8th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Forest Hills Memory Gardens (19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA 24210).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MSA Hospice, Abingdon Church of Christ, or the many volunteer organizations John supported.
