He was predeceased by: his parents, Everett Carl and Lora Frances Bess; his sister Vera Bess; his former wife Jean Courtney Self of Alexandria; and his children, Tex (Karen) and Carolyn Courtney (Larry).

He is survived by: his sisters, Sylvia Hill and Linda Baker. He is also survived by five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials of honor be made to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
