He was predeceased by: his parents, Graham Peake and Emily Peake. He is survived by: his wife Joan; and his children, Leslie, Graham and Kelly. He is also survived by spouses; twelve grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

In 2021, Hayden made a significant and lasting contribution to the field by endowing his extensive intelligence library to the Special Collections Research Center of George Mason University Libraries, ensuring that his life's work would continue to inform and inspire future generations.
