Sunanda leaves behind cherished memories for friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sunanda’s life was marked by connections and experiences that touched those around her. Though she is no longer with us, the moments shared, the laughter, and the support she offered will continue to resonate. All who knew Sunanda will carry forward her memory in their hearts.
She is survived by: her husband Santimay; her son Susanto Basu; and her daughter-in-law Christina of Boston, MA.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, August 30th 2026 at 1:30 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home (4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22203).
In 1992, Sunanda joined the National Science Foundation (NSF), where she became the first woman to serve as Director of the Aeronomy Program.
