He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Sidney Swanson and Rosie Belle Haislip Swanson; his son Larry Justice Swanson, Jr.; his siblings, William Swanson, Landon Swanson, Melvin Swanson, Harold Swanson, John Swanson, Albert Sidney Swanson, Jr., Bendella Hylton, Kathleen Latham and Coreen Swanson; and his former wife Mildred Swanson.

He is survived by: his wife Viola Elizabeth Hairston Swanson; his children, Rosanelle Chaney and Charles Galloway; his stepson Jerome Galloway (Rachel); and his stepsister Mary Artis (James). He is also survived by eight step-grandchildren.
