He was predeceased by: his parents, James Atkinson and Nannie Johnson Atkinson; his wife Nellie Hostetter Atkinson; and his siblings, Harden Atkinson, Robert Marshall and Nancy Ruff.

He is survived by: his children, Kathy D. Garraghty and Raymond Lee Atkinson (Tabatha); his grandchildren, Amanda Garraghty (Amanda Goff), James Howard Garraghty III, Leeann A. Faber and Dustin R. Atkinson; his great grandchildren, Ava M. Garraghty, Parker G. Garraghty and Kayson B. Faber; his sister Marietta Smith; and his close friend Ann Youngblood. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends.
