He was predeceased by: his parents, Ermon Underwood and Bertha Underwood; and his wife Frances Underwood. He is survived by: his daughters, Deborah Horner (Don), Janet Buttram (Jimmy) and Laura Mitchell (Alan); his sister Shirley Barger (Chris); his sister-in-law Doris Williams; his grandchildren, Corey Buttram (Cash), Carly Whitener (Adam), Jamie Looney (Rosie) and Joey Looney (Molly); and his great grandchildren, Neve McDonough, Johnathan Looney-Wilson and Paige Whitener.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations may be made to the CAB Kids Program through the Bower Center for the Arts, 305 N. Bridge Street Bedford, VA 24523, in honor of James's lifelong love of art.
