William Lou Backus Obituary
With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of William Lou Backus in Blue Ridge, Virginia, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on May 18, 2025 at the age of 89. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, William Backus and Ardeth Howard Backus; his former wife Marlene Gutosky Backus; his wife Hazel Lee Massey Backus; and his sister Sharron Lockhart Upleger.
He is survived by: his children, James Backus of Marana, AZ, Robert Backus (Patricia) of Sykesville, MD and Deborah Cloonan (Dave) of Charles Town, WV; and his grandchildren, James Backus, Jr., Alisha Rapkoch, Ashley Todd, Allison Cummings, Josh Backus, Cole Cloonan and Wendy Shafer. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren; and many loving relatives and countless friends.
