He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Canter and Lavalette Brummett Canter; and his brothers, Leroy, William and Calvin Canter.

He is survived by: his wife Betty Goodson Canter; his sons, Michael Canter (Charlotte), David Canter (Yulonda) and Stephen Canter (Melissa); and his grandchildren, Jason Canter, Jacob Canter (Beth), Jessica McGlothlin (Nick) and Sarah Jessee (Cody). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
