She was predeceased by: her parents, Walter Herndon and Ethel Herndon; her husbands, Dr. Ralph W. Hess and Jay C. Elswick; her son Ralph W. Hess Jr.; and her grandson Matt.
She is survived by: her children, Curtis Hess (Eleanor), Danny Hess, Sam Hess (Chandra), Cindy Jackson (Don), Candy Blankenship (Mike) and Sandy Whittington (Jeff); her adoptive son David Phillips (Lucille); her stepdaughter Robin Justus (Randy); and her brother Carl D. Herndon (Helen). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild.
