He was predeceased by: his parents, Perry Mitchell and Virgie Cubbage Mitchell; his wife Mary Ann Cootes; and his siblings, Lillian Lohr, Roxie Strawderman Nesselrodt, Ina Johnson, Bernice Estep Hottinger, Robert "Buck" Mitchell, Otis Mitchell, Theodore Mitchell and Owen Mitchell.
He is survived by: his children, Robert Mitchell (Buffy) of Mt. Solon, Melissa Brown of Broadway and Kathy Lilly (David) of Linville; and his brothers, Leon Mitchell (Beverly) of Harrisonburg and John Mitchell (Cathy). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren.
