He was predeceased by: his mother Eula Lee Gilliss (Wimbrow). He is survived by: his father John Robert Gilliss, Sr.; his wife Mary Kathryn Gilliss (Kathy); his son E. Neil Gilliss (Carrington) of Richmond; and his granddaughters, Mary Archer Gilliss and Taylor Carrington Gilliss.
