He is survived by: his wife Margaret Smith; his children, Aaron Larner (Yuki Kato), Richard Smith (Patrick McClellan), Elizabeth Leonard (Bryan Leonard) and Abigail Larner; his brothers, James M. Larner and Paul F. Larner; and his grandsons, Joshua Leonard, Adam Leonard and Zachary Larner. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Joseph Larner Memorial Lecture in Pharmacology.
