Lucille Herring Mahanes, born on April 30, 1928, passed away on October 1, 2026. Lucille leaves behind family members and others who acknowledge this loss. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
She was predeceased by: her parents, James Edward Herring and Ollie Kirby Herring; her brothers, Daniel, Samuel and Carroll; and her stepchild Carter Mahanes III.
She is survived by: her daughter Linda "Lynn" Payne; her close friends, Jamie Fowler of New York City, Alan Payne (Jennifer), Scott Payne (Tammy) and Sarah Mesco (Adam); and her stepchildren, Jane Ellen Teller (Hugh), Bruce Mahanes, Maxwell Mahanes (Kathy) of Center Barnstead, Scott Mahanes (Claudia), Katheryn Carr (Chris), Andrew Kravetz (Keya), Nathan Kravetz, Alan Kravetz (Cleo), Liz Tyrrell (Ned), Samuel Mahanes, Emily Eden (Jeremy), Curtis Alan Mahanes, Michael Mahanes, Hallie Earman (Matthew) and Elaine Mays (Shawn). She is also survived by great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and at 1:15 PM at the First Baptist Church (735 Park St, Charlottesville, VA 22902). A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the same location. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM at the Monticello Memory Gardens (670 Thomas Jefferson Pkwy, Charlottesville, VA 22902).
