She was predeceased by: her parents, Catherine Tyler Brown and Roosevelt Brown; her husband Adolphus C. Hailstork, Jr.; and her siblings, Barbara A. Brown, Mary Luck Page, Frank Henry Brown and Roosevelt Brown.
She is survived by: her children, Lyria Belle Hailstork of Charlottesville and Roger C. Hailstork of San Diego; her grandchildren, Tyler C. Hailstork and Peyton C. Hailstork; her nieces and nephews, Dennis M. Brown (Jennifer (Drew) Brown), Denise Brown, Barbara Brown, Frank H. Brown Jr. (Patrica), Jessica Brown and Nina Hamilton; her friend Dr. William J. Maloney; her caregivers, Rachel Riedel and Brittney Robertson; and her friends, Ann Morris, Dee Campbell, Kim Swift, Della Morris Grey, Shirley Porter, Rosa Williams and Sissy Leatherwood.
Viewing will be held on Friday, May 29th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the J. F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel (108 6th St NW, Charlottesville, VA 22902). The lying in state will be held on Saturday, May 30th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 30th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Ebenezer Baptist Church (113 6th St NW, Charlottesville, VA 22902).
Her tireless devotion was formally recognized by the New York State Senate, in a Legislative Resolution upon her retirement, "for her significant contributions to the field of education in New York State," a fitting tribute to a lifetime spent shaping the minds of the next generation.
