He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Haywood Custer and Oscar Lena Rowland Custer; his wife Nancy Hager Custer; his grandson Adam Clayton; his siblings, Percy Custer (Anna), Haywood Custer (Lucy), Agnes Roach (Sandy) and Judie Huff; and his son-in-law Michael Church (Jody Custer).

He is survived by: his sons, Jonathan David Custer (Melanie) and Jerry Wayne Custer (Michal); his adoptive daughter Theresa Custer; his grandchildren, Michelle Kautzman of Amanda Crews, D. J, Savannah Gutierrez and Addison Custer; his great grandchildren, Elijah Gutierrez, Jayden Malone and Brooklyn Malone; and his brother Roy Custer (Patricia).
