He was predeceased by: his parents, Haywood Hughes and Hazel Hughes; his siblings, Richard "Dick" Hughes and Betty Smith; and his son John Michael Hughes, Sr..

He is survived by: his son Daniel Edward Hughes Jr.; his daughter-in-law Sharika Hughes; his grandchildren, Johnny Hughes, Destiny White, Ainsley Hughes, Jaelyn Hughes and Caspian Hughes; his brother Haywood Hughes (Lorraine); and his pet Trixie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
