Joan Marie Bryan Obituary
Joan Marie (Powers) Bryan, born October 20, 1951, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Powers (2004) and Magdalen "Peggy" Powers (2017).
A native of Virginia Beach, Joan was a member of the Bayside High School Class of 1969 and a longtime resident of Chesapeake, Virginia.
Joan is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Ronnie Bryan; her daughters, Lisa and Laura "Lolo" Bryan; her cherished grandchildren, Kaylee (William) Harrison, Tyler Marler, Kaya and Kendall Overton; and her great-grandchildren, Ryder and Raymond Harrison. She is also survived by her siblings, Frank (Ginger) Powers, Jean Stuart, Tom (Marie) Powers, Bob (Gwyn) Powers, and Elizabeth (Michael) Brown, along with many nieces and nephews.
Joan began her career as a dental assistant before taking time off to care for her young children and to master bookkeeping for her husband's construction company. Later, she resumed her role as a dental assistant and then became the office manager for a periodontist's practice. Her warmth and personality left a lasting impression on patients and coworkers.
She was also a master seamstress and instructor, a talent she carried proudly throughout her life. Her passion for sewing began early—she was awarded her first sewing machine for a dress she made and entered into a statewide Singer Youth sewing competition. The dress was selected to be displayed at the New York World's Fair (1964–65), a moment that sparked her lifelong love of sewing and quilt shows.
Joan was known for her vibrant, quirky spirit and her joyful, carefree singing—sometimes offbeat, but always from the heart. She was deeply loving and charitable, especially in her support of breast cancer organizations, and she treasured time spent with her grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and happiness.
Joan expressed her love through her hands, creating countless handmade quilts (never just "blankets"), performing alterations, and designing beautiful dresses for those closest to her—including pageant, prom, and wedding gowns. Her work was not only skillful but filled with care, intention, and love.
Services will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory, 524 Cedar Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23322. Visitation will be held Friday, May 1, at 6:00 PM till 9:00 PM, with a funeral service to follow on Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in Joan's honor.
In celebration of her bright and colorful spirit, guests are encouraged to wear vibrant colors rather than black to the services.
Joan's legacy is one of creativity, generosity, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
