He was predeceased by: his parents, Olia Whitesell Vance and Esther Marguerite Bowman Vance; and his wife Verna Louise Mills Vance. He is survived by: his children, Dr. Charles Timothy Vance (Susan Vance) of Greenville, SC and Rose Vance Gibson (Dee Gibson) of Glen Allen, VA.; his grandchildren, Carlene Vance, Stephen Vance (Julia), Sarah Vance, Marlene Gibson and Carrie Gibson Connolly (Tom); his great grandchildren, Madison, Caroline, Patrick Connolly, Jeremy and Valerie Vance; and his sister Esther Gordon (Bob) of Harrisonburg, VA. He is also survived by three nephews and two nieces.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in John's honor to the Berea Christian Church 4109 Driver Lane, Suffolk, VA.
