He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther C. Barnes and Nova Ruth Brown Barnes; his former wife Reba Dale Barnes; his children, Kimberly "Chic" Renee Barnes and Jason Larry Barnes (Dale); and his brother Karl Wayne Barnes, Sr..

He is survived by: his wife Brenda D. Barnes; his daughter Jennifer D. Dunnagan (Brian); his stepdaughter Melanie V. Brown; his grandchildren, Jason Barnes (Heather), Ashlyn and Avery Dunnagan; his great grandchild Josie Renee Barnes; his sisters, Patricia Williams and Mary Sue Brown (Albert); and his sisters-in-law, Frances O. "Pudgie" Barnes, Patricia Rice (Tommy), Diane Bryce (John) and Kathleen Williams. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or the American Diabetes Association.
