She was predeceased by: her parents, Ellen Askew and Lon Durrence; her great great grandchild Maggie Clark Gavin Maxwell; her husband Lertie Eugene Deel; her children, Jeffrey Deel, Stephen Deel and Shirl Hobbs; her grandson Bruce Bowman; her siblings, Margaret Stafford and Wayne Durrence; and her stepfather Robert Askew.
She is survived by: her daughters, Maria McMillan and Gena Maxwell (Jack); her siblings, Micky Rouse and Robert Askew; her grandchildren, Jason Furlough (Crystal), Christina McMillan, Melissa McMillan, Kevin Deel, Justin Deel, Jeffrey Ryan Deel, Stephanie Deel, Mindy Bowman Buchanan, David Maxwell (Vikki), Carla Maxwell Clark and Ron Maxwell (Janet); and her great great grandchildren, Savannah McMillan, Noah Barnette, Connor Brinn, Sabrina Furlough Cox, Isabella Furlough, Nicole Maxwell Marion, Courtney Maxwell Lee, Andrew Maxwell and Jacklin Clark McAvoy. She is also survived by 6 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, August 17th 2025 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Monday, August 18th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Graham Funeral Home (1112 Kempsville Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23320). A funeral service was held on Monday, August 18th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. A graveside service was held on Monday, August 18th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Riverside Memorial Park (1000 E Indian River Rd, Norfolk, VA 23523).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are appreciated to support Shirley's celebration of life funeral service.
