He was predeceased by: his wife Louise Jones Akers; his parents, George Leonard Akers and Blanche Myers Akers; his brothers, Freddie Akers and Harold Akers; and his son-in-law George N. Porterfield, Jr..

He is survived by: his son Leonard Barry Akers (Donna); his granddaughter McKenzie Akers of Christiansburg; his daughter Cindy Porterfield (Jim Hawley) of Christiansburg; his granddaughter Dr. Carrie Porterfield Neal (Jeff Neal); his great grandchildren, Emma, George and Jackson Neal of Hickory, NC; his granddaughter Dr. Katie Porterfield Collins (Adam Collins); his great grandchildren, Porter and Louisa Collins of Mooresville, NC.; his sister Janice Jones of Christiansburg; and his sisters-in-law, Martha Akers, Bobbi Akers and Sylvia Jones.
