He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Ray Tharpe and Mary Lipscomb Tharpe; his siblings, James Cleveland Tharpe, Elizabeth T. Hudson, Arthur Ray Tharpe, Harvey Thomas Tharpe and Joyce T. Moorefield; and his siblings-in-law, Herbert Binford, William Smith and Shirley T. Batte.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Vassar Tharpe; his daughters, Debra T. Crews (Victor) of Long Island, VA, Teresa T. Matters of Manassas, VA and Angela T. Privette (Willie) of Clover; his sisters, Jane T. Binford of South Hill, VA and Nancy T. Smith of Kenbridge, VA; and his grandchildren, Josh Crews, Christopher Ting, Nikki Catron and Alyssa Kurtz. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 12th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church (8077 Newbill School Rd, Clover, VA 24534). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 12th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
